ITALY Name of the project: "CRAINat - Conservation and recovery of Austropotamobius pallipes in Italian Natura2000 sites" Society: Province of Chieti Programme: LIFE+Nature Description/ Objectives: The aims of this project are to realize specific actions to safeguard and conserve the autochthonous freshwater crayfish, which conservation priority is particularly high as specified in Attachment II of Directive 92/43/CEE "Habitat". Moreover, the aim of the project is also to raise the number of population of the crayfish with more than 60 actions realized in Natura2000 sites as well as conservation ex situ, genetic characterization, monitoring and containment of allochthonous species, manteinance and restoration of habitats and specific actions for the reintroduction of young A. pallipes. Partners of the project are Abruzzo Region, Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park and the Province of Isernia. In 2012, the LIFE Programme will celebrate 20 years of projects so the intent of the Province of Chieti is to organize an International Convention (around May 2012) for the exchange of good practice among experts of the field.
